SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 23 mm, 17.10 g, 6 h), circa 475-470. Charioteer, holding kentron in his right hand and reins in his left, driving slow quadriga to right; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses with a wreath. Rev. ΣVR-ΑΚΟ-ΣΙΟ-И Pearl-diademed head of Arethousa to right, her hair drawn up at the back, wearing single pendant earring and plain necklace; around, four dolphins swimming right; all within shallow circular incuse. Boehringer 321 (V156/R224). HGC 2, 1307. McClean 2618 and pl. 91, 3 (same dies). Randazzo 489-93 (same dies). Darkly toned. Minor traces of corrosion, otherwise, good very fine.
